Thomas McAndrew brings over 25 years of experience in energy asset management and industry analysis, complex portfolio management and asset optimization; structuring and negotiating wholesale and retail electric transactions; founding, building and managing sophisticated trading desks; energy risk management; power plant engineering, operations and management; founding, building and selling a distributed electrical generation startup.  Mr. McAndrew:

  • Has been building Enchanted Rock since 2003.
  • Founded and managed Enchanted Rock Energy, a $200MM+ energy commodity hedge fund (2004-2005).
  • Founded and managed a consulting firm focused on assisting energy buyers manage their financial risk.
  • Was the Head of Trading and Portfolio Management at Calpine Corporation from (2000-2002) where he was directly responsible for managing one of the largest merchant power and natural gas portfolios in North America. Calpine was the only merchant to add significant new electricity generation in California during the 2001 Electricity Crisis. He very successfully managed Calpine’s merchant portfolio through the power market run-up and subsequent collapse of 2001-02 and the volatile natural gas markets of 2002.
  • Co-founded Progressive Power Solutions (PPS) (2000), a startup which developed a system for on-site electrical generation to provide power to critical electric loads in the San Francisco Bay Area. McAndrew refined the concepts of price-based electrical availability and differential reliability, and incorporated them into his Reliability Area Networks (RAN) provisional patent. PPS was sold to Calpine in September, 2000.
  • Founded and built a highly successful energy trading business at Statoil (1997-2000) and was a senior trader at Enron Corporation (1994-1997).
  • Has significant energy engineering and operations experience. As a US Naval Officer (1985-1991), he directed the operations of the nuclear power plants on two US Navy ships and qualified as Naval Nuclear Chief Engineer. McAndrew was first exposed to differential reliability concepts while operating nuclear power plants onboard these ships. He also was a Nuclear Maintenance Support Engineer for Southern Company (1991-1992).
